Last month, what was once unthinkable happened – Final Fantasy VII launched on a Nintendo system. It was a game that revolutionized the industry in more ways than one, and as part of Square Enix’s “Inside” series, which previously covered Chocobo’s Mystery Dungeon and Final Fantasy IX, we’ve got new interviews from the people who made it. Art Director Yusuke Naora, Writer/Director Yoshinori Kitase, and publicity producer Shinji Hashimoto all share their thoughts in the video below, just make sure to turn on closed captions!

The topics they cover are vast – including how the game evolved from an early pitch about a detective in New York City, the Shinra HQ building being inspired by the “Warship Building” that used to be Square Enix’s HQ, the difficulty of transitioning from pixel-art to 3D software, inspirational pizza, and much more besides.

You can dive into Final Fantasy VII on Switch now via the eShop.

Whether it’s an exciting new entry in a series long established or a weird experiment meant only for the dedicated, Tom is eager to report on it. Rest assured, if Nintendo ever announces Elite Beat Agents 2, he’ll be there.
