It was only five days ago when we learned that the Nintendo Switch made Time Magazine’s 25 Best Inventions of 2017 list, and the good news for the Big N hasn’t stopped there. Just yesterday, Time announced that the Switch also landed the number one spot on its Top 10 Gadgets of 2017 list, praising the system for its dual forms of gameplay for both at-home entertainment and on-the-go fun.
Our excitement and pride for Nintendo’s hybrid system continues today, as Time has presented the Top 10 Video Games of 2017. Not only have four games on the Switch made the prestigious list, with three of them being original Nintendo titles exclusive to the console, but the highly coveted first two spots are taken by none other than Super Mario Odyssey (#2) and The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild (#1). Following their lead is the crazy-fun strategy title Mario + Rabbids: Kingdom Battle, placing eighth, and Wolfenstein II: The New Colossus, sitting pretty in fourth place.
Have a look at the full list:
- 1. The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild (Nintendo Switch)
- 2. Super Mario Odyssey (Nintendo Switch)
- 3. What Remains of Edith Finch (PlayStation 4, Xbox One, PC)
- 4. Wolfenstein II: The New Colossus (PlayStation 4, Xbox One, PC, Nintendo Switch)
- 5. Persona 5 (PlayStation 4)
- 6. Cuphead (Xbox One, PC)
- 7. PlayerUnknown Battlegrounds (PC, Xbox One)
- 8. Mario + Rabbids: Kingdom Battle (Nintendo Switch)
- 9. Horizon Zero Dawn (PlayStation 4)
- 10. Destiny 2 (Xbox One, PlayStation 4, PC)
Time applauded Breath of the Wild in a unique fashion by showing its appreciation for a metaphor between Nintendo’s history with video games and the Zelda title itself:
Scrambling across the idyllic vistas of Nintendo’s vast new fantasy sandbox The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, it’s easy to see the action-adventure’s sunken structures—plaintive artifacts of a vanished golden age waiting to be restored—as a metaphor for Nintendo itself.
The description goes on to say that, above all else, Breath of the Wild deserves to be celebrated for Nintendo’s design principles. We couldn’t be more proud of our favorite game company for receiving these high praises and such humble recognition from an outlet as illustrious as Time.
All four games deserve these spots on the magazine’s 2017 list, and the reasonings behind why the titles earned places there are wonderfully stated in their designated sections. We highly recommend you pop over to Time’s page where the Top 10 Video Games of 2017 are listed so you can have a look yourself — you won’t be disappointed.
