Hinted at a few months back, Nintendo unveiled Metroid Ravenous during today’s Nintendo Direct presentation similarly to how it announced Metroid Dread five years back. The first game in the series made specifically for Nintendo Switch 2, this adventure hearkens back to Metroid’s 2D roots and seemingly picks up directly from the ending of Dread. Samus is more ravenous (pun intended) and has a new ability to outright disintegrate enemies with her hand. Something has changed within her after she confronted her past.

Scheduled for release on January 28th, 2027, Nintendo also announced a Collector’s Edition package that will include a new amiibo of what looks like Metroid Samus. Two other amiibo will release alongside the game, which include a regular version of Samus and a Chozo statue. It’s nice to see Nintendo going all out for classic Metroid, especially since I’m one of those weirdos who vastly prefer it to the Prime series.

I’m more stunned by the trailer showing Samus getting stabbed. I figured that wouldn’t be a thing Nintendo happily promotes during a Direct, but it also folds into Samus’ evolution as a character. She clearly has more power now than at any other point and is able to take quite a beating. It will be interesting to see how the developers make counters to her new abilities.
