With Square Enix currently doing interviews for the upcoming Final Fantasy VII Revelation, it seems some older comments about other potential remakes are starting to make the rounds. In the latest bit of rumor milling, editor of RPG Site Alex Donaldson had commented in a ResetEra thread about Final Fantasy XIV director Naoki Yoshida’s comments regarding a potential Final Fantasy VI remake requiring four or five games. According to him, work on a remake of Final Fantasy IX was quite far along, but Square Enix decided it didn’t want to move forward with it.
“There was an FF9 remake, and it was a single game, and it was very far along. Yoshida even made some vague comments like these hinting at the fact around the last expansion’s FF9 tribute content,” Donaldson claims. “So, it is possible, with the right scope, which to be clear is obviously a smaller scope than FF7R. However for various reasons – surely a story for another day – that project stalled out, and it’s no longer moving forward. And Yoshida makes comments like this to manage fan expectations.”
As Donaldson points out, plans change all the time. The recently released Dissidia Duellum Final Fantasy was cancelled for about a year before Square Enix returned to the project. It’s possibly that Final Fantasy IX’s remake will get revived in the future when a team has a lull between major releases. “So nothing is concrete and in the case of 9 that work is still there waiting to be revisited, though I did feel the game was truly dead when illustrations created as potential box art and as key art were just tweeted out for the anniversary,” he writes.
For what it’s worth, I could see Square Enix doing something smaller scale in terms of a remake for Final Fantasy IX. While it has become a fan favorite, it never carried the same reverence that Final Fantasy VII commands. I would have expected something more in lines with the 3D remakes of Final Fantasy III and IV on DS, which act as interesting companions to the originals. It’s not going to happen anytime soon, though, if ever.
