It’s a little surreal to think that I’ve been writing about Tetris 99 for eight years now. Released as the first free game for Switch Online subscribers, I’m astonished that Nintendo has continued to support it for all of these years. The support isn’t ending anytime soon, either, as a brand-new Star Fox theme will be hitting the game for its 55th (!) Maximus Cup event this weekend.
Set to take place between July 10th-13th, 2026, players will be able to unlock a new theme based on the Star Fox remake for Nintendo Switch 2. All you need to do is acquire 100 event points during the tournament period and the theme is yours to keep forever. You will, obviously, need an active Switch Online subscription, though owning the physical version of Tetris 99 is mostly for DLC purposes.
The theme, itself, it maybe a little subdued. I think more could have been done with it, personally, but as a promotion for Star Fox, it gets the job done. I’m still in shock that Tetris 99 is getting new content, but then why hasn’t it received a Switch 2 update? I need my 4K Tetris, or 120 fps Tetris in handheld. That would be amazing.
