Atlus had quite the showing during the recent Xbox Showcase, with a release date and fresh trailer for Persona 4 Revival and our first real tease of Persona 6. Neither of those is currently announced for Switch 2, leaving Nintendo fans craving a stylish RPG based on social bonds, societal woes, and looming conspiracy out of luck…
Well, at least until the Nintendo Direct, when the developer’s excellent Metaphor: ReFantazio was confirmed for the handheld hybrid later this year.
Metaphor sees you leading a band of characters from all walks of life in an original medieval fantasy world. The king has fallen, and an open popularity contest called the Tournament for the Throne has begun. As you travel across the game’s world, you’ll unravel an intriguing story all in the Persona team’s signature style. That includes the game’s take on the press turn combat system, and persona-like entities known as archetypes that give way to a job system.
It all blends together into an exceptional game that received rave reviews when it first released, and won me over very quickly on PS5. I expect the Switch 2 version to perform closer to the Persona 3 Reload port, but I’m thankful it’s on the way and hopeful it’s just as enthralling the second time around.
The game’s director, Katsura Hashino, shared the following statement in the wake of the announcement:
