With the release of Mortal Kombat 2 hitting theaters nationwide this Friday, series co-creator Ed Boon has been making the rounds for press junkets and talking about the journey of adapting the series to the silver screen. While most questions are centered on the legacy of the franchise and its various permutations over time, Boon has made some comments about the future of the games. In a recent interview with Collider, he confirmed that NetherRealm studios is throwing around ideas for a new entry.
When asked about whether NetherRealm was developing Injustice 3 next or something else, Boon replied, “I wish I could tease something. I think if I teased and gave it away, I would probably get in trouble. But we’re definitely pursuing another Mortal Kombat game, and we’re definitely doing more, as well, so there are a lot of pots on the stove – not just with games, though, with other forms of media and whatnot. So we’ve got a lot of great announcements that are coming.”

That might sound disappointing for fans of NR’s WB focused fighter, but I can see the logic here. The previous installment in the MK series, Mortal Kombat 1, was kind of rushed out to compete against Street Fighter 6 in 2023. It was also prioritized by NR because of uncertainty surrounding the state of WB Games. Warner Bros, in general, has seen many ups and downs since 2023 and recently landed under new ownership with Paramount Pictures.
MK1, though, was met with solid enough sales, but pretty vocal disdain from series fans. Critics were also not as high on it, and over time, lackluster sales of DLC and some sketchy business practices implemented into the game soured the pot. While Injustice 3 would be welcomed, NetherRealm likely wants to get another solid Mortal Kombat game out there to right the ship. If MK1 is the only game for the next five or six years, that’s not going to be good.
