At long last, the Mortal Kombat: Legacy Kollection has received its most requested feature in a new update. Writing on its official website last night, developer Digital Eclipse announced that Kombat fans can now play online matches together regardless of which platform they are playing on. This opens the MK Legacy Kollection up to a much wider pool of participants, which is fantastic news for Nintendo Switch 2 owners.

Supported in the update are both Online Quick Play and Arcade modes, as well as a 2-on-2 mode for Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3 (Arcade and SNES), Mortal Kombat Trilogy (PlayStation 1), and Mortal Kombat 4 (Arcade). Due to technical limitations, the original Switch does not feature crossplay for MK Trilogy, though it is supported on Switch 2.

Another rather big addition to the game is true VRR support. While that sounds like it would be standard, it actually serves a big role for Mortal Kombat: the original arcade games ran at 54 Hz. As you can tell, that’s not quite 60 fps, so with VRR support fully integrated, you can now play the arcade games at their original refresh rates. This should improve input latency and visual consistency, not to mention present a much more accurate representation of how the games felt.

All told, this sounds like a substantial update that should improve the quality of the Legacy Kollection for even the toughest naysayers. I’m not sure if the netcode issues identified at launch have been resolved, but the Mortal Kombat Legacy Kollection is otherwise a definitive package of classic MK games. You can read the full patch notes for this update below.

Patch Notes

  • Krossplay now enables players across all platforms to play online with other MK fans. PlayStation, Xbox, Switch, and PC gamers can now meet and play in the same online lobbies or Quick Play sessions. (Note: Due to technical limitations, Mortal Kombat Trilogy is not available for online Krossplay matches when playing on original Switch consoles.)
  • The 2-on-2 modes featured in Ultimate MK3 (Arcade), Ultimate MK3 (SNES), Mortal Kombat Trilogy (PS1) and Mortal Kombat 4 (Arcade) are now available for online play. These modes are designated with the words “2 on 2” when they are played in online rooms.
  • In all supported games, players can select their level before an online match.
  • Variable refresh rates (VRR) are now supported for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One X, Xbox One S, Nintendo Switch 2 (handheld mode) and PC.
  • Fixed an issue where the minimum connection strength option for rooms was not always working properly.
  • Fixed an issue with Kombat Kard where replays could be accidently erased if unfavorited.
  • Updated localization for various languages.
  • Added various bug fixes and small improvements.
