In a rather surprising move today, Nintendo has uploaded the soundtracks to Super Mario Galaxy 1 and 2 to Spotify. While that would seem like a normal thing to do, it’s a strange decision considering Nintendo launched its own dedicated music app, Nintendo Music, last year. For all intents and purposes, the company has been using that as a means to get music out into the wild instead of including it on other services.

From Spotify, the company writes, “Nintendo and Spotify are welcoming fans to the Super Mario Bros. 40th anniversary and the release of The Super Mario Galaxy Movie with new playlists and a special in-app experience.” To that end, two new playlists are available to stream, which include music from the games and music from the film. As you listen to tracks from either playlist, a little Luma will appear on the playback bar to jazz up the experience some.

I guess the release of The Super Mario Galaxy Movie was too big of an occasion to let principle get in the way. It would be nice if Nintendo offered its soundtracks on something other than a paid subscription service, but having the Super Mario Galaxy soundtrack on Spotify is a start. Maybe in time, the company will ease up on its protective stance and host soundtracks across different streaming services.
