In probably the least surprising news of today, Professor Layton and the New World of Steam has been delayed into 2026. Level-5 made the announcement ahead of the Tokyo Game Show this weekend, where the developer is on location with a new demo for the game and a brand-new trailer. This is the first real gameplay we’ve seen of Layton’s seventh outing and, unsurprisingly, it looks great.
Explaining why this decision was made, Level-5 told press, “Although the release was originally scheduled for 2025, in order to deliver the game in the best possible form, the launch has been rescheduled for 2026. We deeply regret any inconvenience this delay may cause and greatly appreciate your understanding and continued support.”
With the game now releasing on both Nintendo Switch 1 and 2, the new trailer is presumably being run on Switch 2 hardware. The frame rate is much higher than I expected and the visual style looks like an incredible adaptation of what the previous Layton games did on DS. The series isn’t completely alien to 3D models as both 3DS games utilized them, but the higher fidelity character models truly capture the look of Layton’s concept art. It’s a very pretty game.
While no new release date has been given, fans can expect Professor Layton and the New World of Steam sometime next year. Hopefully, the wait will be worth it.
