It should be no surprise to anyone that some of the earliest Nintendo Switch 2 games were started as Switch 1 exclusives. While Nintendo was working to finalize the hardware specifications of its latest system, devs were busy working on new projects that would then be ported over to newer hardware, allowing for some tweaks to bring out the best of their original plans. One such game to benefit from this was Yoshi and the Mysterious Book, which released this past May. In an interview with Nintendo Dream this month, developer Good-Feel explained how the extra horsepower of the Switch 2 allowed the team to realize the vision they wanted for Yoshi’s latest adventure.
While the majority of the game’s design remained the same, there was a certain enemy that may have posed problems for the aging original Switch hardware. As producer Hisashi Nogami told Nintendo Dream, “For creatures that continually increase in numbers like the Scatterpuffs, I wondered if the Switch was going to be okay… but for the Switch 2 they could increase over and over again.”

The game’s director, Masahiro Yamamoto, added, “We were able to do things such as make graphics that feel more inline with the style of an encyclopedia, and being able to largely remove the limit on the numbers of individual creatures. Therefore, more than when we were making it for the Switch it was easier to realize the game in line with our concept.”
Nogami concurred, saying, “We really worked hard on the graphics, and as such I feel the world of the encyclopedia really came across. I think that was one of the blessings of the Switch 2. And then… Good-Feel jokingly said that it was a specialty of theirs to make big things appear.” Yoshi and the Mysterious Book may have been possible on the original Switch, but it would have had to compromise more to fit on the system.
