Two of the most maligned Mortal Kombat games in the franchise’s history have been confirmed as inclusions in the upcoming Legacy Kollection, thanks to a video from the Gamescom 2025 showfloor.
The footage is available to watch through Reddit (via Wario64), after being originally shared (and since removed) on X by @tabmok99. The recording shows a video of the game’s menu, with Mortal Kombat Mythologies: Sub-Zero and Mortal Kombat: Special Forces visible.

Both spinoffs were the first in the series to break away from the traditional fighting genre, each offering fans an action-adventure experience following a singular character.
Sub-Zero is a prequel to the original Mortal Kombat, launching on the Nintendo 64 and PlayStation in 1997. Players control the titular, ice-powered antihero on a quest to find Shinnok’s amulet, in a side-scrolling platformer with familiar Mortal Kombat controls.
Set even earlier in the series timeline, Special Forces released on the PlayStation in 2000 and follows Major Jackson “Jax” Briggs in a pursuit of vengeance. With his comrades slaughtered by the Black Dragon gang, Jax embarks on a mission to stop them from securing a powerful artifact known as the Eye of Chitian.
Considering both games were panned by critics and maintain a legacy of being some of the worst Mortal Kombat games ever made, it speaks to Digital Eclipse’s dedication to thoroughly preserve as much of the series as possible.
The compilation will also include the following:
- Mortal Kombat (1992): Arcade, SNES, Genesis, Game Boy, Game Gear
- Mortal Kombat II (1993): Arcade, SNES, Genesis, Game Boy, 32X
- Mortal Kombat 3 (1995): Arcade, SNES, Genesis
- Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3 (1995): Arcade, SNES
- Mortal Kombat Trilogy (1996): PlayStation
- Mortal Kombat 4 (1997): Arcade
- Mortal Kombat Advance (2001): Game Boy Advance
- Mortal Kombat: Deadly Alliance (2002): Game Boy Advance
- Mortal Kombat: Tournament Edition (2003): Game Boy Advance
Mortal Kombat: Legacy Kollection will launch on both Nintendo Switch 1 and 2, as well as other platforms. Its release date has yet to be formally announced, but a leak on the Xbox app suggests it will come out on September 30th. Physical versions – including Standard, Deluxe, and Kollector’s Editions – will ship on December 12th.
