As people discovered yesterday, the newly released Nintendo Switch 2 is compatible with a variety of generic USB webcams for use with GameChat. That’s great for people who already have a webcam in their possession and don’t want to shell out for Nintendo’s official camera. What if you wanted to use something a little more high-tech, though? What about using your cellphone’s built-in camera, which you can connect to your PC with some cables? Well, the Switch 2 supports that too, even if it’s not quite as simple to set up.
YouTube channel “Will It Work?” recently demonstrated the ability to use an iPhone camera on the Switch 2 with a few adapters. As he explains, most modern smartphones support what is known as UVC (or USB Video Class, a designation that denotes when a USB device can support streaming video), so it stands to reason that they should be compatible with the Switch 2. Sure enough, after connecting a USB-C to HDMI cable, then an HDMI capture cable, you should be off to the races. “Will It Work?” did download an extra app to give them access to a fullscreen camera mode, but with those being free on both iOS and Android, it shouldn’t require any extra money beyond the cables.
Now, if you’re thinking this will cost an arm and a leg, the pricing is actually not too bad. The recommended cables in the video come out to around $31. Nintendo’s official webcam runs $55 without taxes. It’s certainly more convenient to use Nintendo’s option, but sticking with your smartphone can save you some money. It will also likely be of much higher quality than Nintendo’s 1080p option.
