Yesterday marked the 30th anniversary of Chrono Trigger’s original Japanese release and to celebrate, Square Enix announced that it has plans to launch various projects to commemorate the game. In a tweet from the official Japanese SE account, the company wrote, “As we mark the 30th anniversary, we will be launching various projects that go beyond the world of the game over the next year to express our gratitude to everyone who has played Chrono Trigger so far.”

What this means isn’t exactly clear, but a likely candidate is a re-release for modern platforms. Chrono Trigger has been available on Steam for some time now and while this port was initially pretty bad, the company put out a series of updates that brought it up to speed. Having that version come to consoles would be excellent for players who don’t enjoy revisiting old classics at their desks. It would also be great for preservation’s sake, especially if a physical release happens.

Square Enix could also be planning a full remake of the game or maybe a concert series, etc. The possibilities are really endless and with how vague the initial announcement is, there’s no telling what’s in store. At any rate, it’s astonishing that 30 years after its release, Chrono Trigger is still regarded as possibly the best RPG ever made. It’s certainly one of my favorites and while I do think certain innovations in the genre would fit in well with the game’s combat, there really isn’t anything I would change in Chrono Trigger. The game is a classic for a very good reason.
