When it was first revealed that icons for all three Mother series titles would be coming to Nintendo Switch Online, many fans wondered if the Mother 3 icons would be available in the West. Disappointingly (but not at all surprisingly), the Mother 3 icon elements are indeed only available in Japan. That being said, there is a fairly simple way to circumvent this restriction for those who really want these!
Steps to take in order to get Mother 3 NSO icons
In order for this to work, you’ll need to change the region of your Nintendo account via the Nintendo website. This is fairly straightforward to do, but there are a few things to keep in mind:
- If you have a child account for someone under 13, you will need to submit a credit card to verify your identity as an adult.
- Furthermore, any Gold Points and eShop balance you have in your native region will be unavailable until you change your region back to the region you obtained them in. Fortunately, this does not apply to Platinum Points, which are needed to purchase the icons, so no need to worry about that.
- Lastly, you will need to cancel any subscriptions that utilize automatic renewal, which can be a hassle – this includes things like Pokémon Home and Nintendo Switch Online.
Thankfully, so long as you change back and reactivate automatic renewal before your current pass runs out, you won’t lose online access.
Known Nintendo Switch Online icons bug
If you’ve been keeping up with all of this, you might be aware of a known bug associated with this method. The bug would cause the Nintendo Switch Online application to be unable to use the icon creator if you owned Mother 3 icon elements and were in a region outside of Japan. Fortunately, as of today this bug has been fixed, and any Mother 3 icon elements purchased are able to be used in other regions as well! Make sure to get all of the ones you want though, since once you switch back to your original region you won’t be able to purchase more Mother 3 icons without once again changing your region.
