I never thought I’d see the day when games like GoldenEye and Jet Force Gemini would be considered 18+, but here we are!

Last night, Nintendo Japan announced that Nintendo 64 classics GoldenEye and Jet Force Gemini (Star Twins in Japan) would both be coming to Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Members in December, with a bit of a catch. Instead of just dropping the titles on the regular app, a new, 18+ version of the application will be launching to comply with ratings boards in Japan.

But why the theatrics for what now seem like relatively tame games in today’s landscape? It traces back to the initial ratings assigned to these ’90s releases. Both Gemini and GoldenEye received a Cero Z rating, designating them for audiences aged 18 and above. As these ratings didn’t change over time, Nintendo had to introduce a brand-new app to comply with Japanese regulations for their releases. Perhaps this opens the door for future launches, like the exceptional Resident Evil 2 port, on the platform. Only time will tell.
