Get the popcorn, torches, pitchforks, and tinsel ready – it’s that time of year where Geoff Keighley reveals the nominees for The Game Awards 2022. And it’s… well, the same as it always is. The same 2-3 AAA titles in all the major categories, a token indie game of mild renown getting some nods for credibility, and some very painful snubs. But let’s start with the big Nintendo news: Xenoblade Chronicles 3 is up for Game of the Year, alongside other titans like Elden Ring.

Xenoblade is also up for Best Score/Music and Best RPG. Also in the Best RPG category are the remake wunderkind Live A Live, the HD-2D tactics game Triangle Strategy, and the open and refreshing Pokémon Legends: Arceus. Nintendo games also dominate the “Best Family” category, with Kirby and the Forgotten Land, Mario + Rabbids: Sparks of Hope, Nintendo Switch Sports, and Splatoon 3. Mario + Rabbids also gets a Best Strategy nod, while Splatoon 3 is up for Best Multiplayer. Indie titles on Switch like Neon White and Tunic are up for a small handful of awards, and The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom is up for Most Anticipated Game.
That leaves a lot of holes among the nominations (Live A Live not getting a nod for Best Music is unforgivable in my eyes), with most major categories among art, sound, direction, etc. going to God of War Ragnarok, Elden Ring, and Horizon: Forbidden West. You can vote for your favorites now at The Game Awards website and then tune in to the show on December 8th to see the awards (and a whole lot of advertisements) live.
