Capcom has revealed that its action-adventure blockbuster Pragmata had a different tone in the project’s early stages.

The game’s lead producer, Masachika Kawata, told The Ringer (via Nintendo Everything) how the game evolved over its lengthy development period.

“A lot earlier, Capcom experimented with what type of game it could be,” Kawata said.

“At one point, there was an idea to make something a little bit more horror focused.

“Stepping back a little, this was going to be a new series, a new IP, and so horror, which seems to have a lot in common with Resident Evil, didn’t seem like the most compelling use of the new title.”

Pragmata took six years for Capcom to develop, having been announced in 2020 and only just recently launching in 2026. After numerous delays and years in development hell, the new IP eventually launched to critical acclaim and impressive sales figures.

Nintendo Wire’s glowing review of the game stated: “For anyone looking for an enjoyable, unique, dense single-player experience, Pragmata is a godsend.”
