A listing for Final Fantasy VII Revelation on the Xbox store has revealed a predicted Mature rating for the upcoming action RPG, leading the fandom to speculate how a particular scene from the original game may be adapted.
The page says “Rating pending, likely Mature 17+.” The ESRB rating guide says “games with this rating “May contain intense violence, blood and gore, sexual content and/or strong language.”
Since the rating is pending, it is possible that the final game may not carry a Mature rating. If the placeholder is accurate, however, then it may indicate a significant shift in tone compared to the previous two entries in the Final Fantasy VII Remake trilogy, which were rated T for Teen.
Many Final Fantasy fans already have an idea what scene could potentially drive up the age rating.
Note: The following contains spoilers for the original Final Fantasy VII, and therefore potential spoilers for Revelation.
The scene in question happens towards the end of the original game. With only a week until Sephiroth’s Meteor falls on the planet, Cloud asks everyone in his group to come up with their own personal reason to keep on fighting — and if they have one, they can return to the Highwind airship to pursue the final battle with Sephiroth.
The party disbands, leaving only Cloud and Tifa, who have nowhere else to go. The pair share a heartfelt conversation, and spend the night together under the Highwind. The original scene is somewhat vague about how far Cloud and Tifa’s relationship progresses physically, though it is heavily implied that the two had a sexual encounter.
Fans are speculating that Square Enix may adapt the scene more explicitly in Revelation, hence the Mature rating.
“Spicy Highwind scene confirmed?” said X user TifaTheMonk.
“If FF7 Revelation really ends up being rated mature… then… that could mean… under the Highwind?” said X user GamerTifa7.
If the rating goes through, then the game would become the second mainline Final Fantasy title to be rated Mature after 2023’s Final Fantasy XVI, which featured sexual themes, strong language, and violence.
Final Fantasy VII Revelation will launch on Nintendo Switch 2, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC in Spring 2027. The game received a new trailer at this week’s Gamescom event, showing the giant Weapon monsters, submarine combat, and more.
