Nearly two months ago during Nintendo’s last Direct presentation, Square Enix announced that native ports of the Kingdom Hearts games would be coming to Switch 2 in a brand-new Compilation pack. Titled “The Kingdom Hearts Collection [I-III],” fans noticed something was off with the box art. It looked as if it was either altered with AI or outright AI generated. Square Enix eventually swapped the box art, but it seems as if the company wants to set the record straight that the original art was not created or tweaked with AI.
Speaking to GameSpot in a very belated statement, Square Enix wrote:
“We’re aware of feedback regarding recent Kingdom Hearts visuals. These assets were created by our development team without the use of generative AI, and the issues resulted from human error. Quality is extremely important to us, and updated assets have been implemented where appropriate.”
The original post on Twitter is still accessible, though official press assets elsewhere have been changed. I’m not really convinced the original wasn’t some AI trickery that Square Enix is simply trying to cover up, but I suppose it doesn’t matter anymore. The final physical copy will not feature the original wonky looking version.
