Viral co-op horror game Escape the Backrooms has launched on Nintendo Switch 2 with no prior announcements – making it a surprise release.

Available digitally via the eShop for $12.99 / £9.99, up to four players can gather online to explore over 30 backrooms while avoiding hostile entities.

“Communicate with your teammates with proximity voice chat. Entities can also hear you, so stay quiet whenever you’re near danger,” the official description reads.

Escape the Backrooms originally launched as an Early Access title on Steam in 2022, before seeing a full release on the platform in 2025 and on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S in 2026. The Backrooms concept was developed on the imageboard website 4chan in 2019 and became a popular Creepypasta tale online.

The game is particularly inspired by Kane Parsons’ Backrooms web series, which debuted in 2022. Parsons directed a feature film of the same name in 2026, which was critically acclaimed and became a huge commercial success.
