A few days back, it was reported that Nintendo had suffered a data breach at the hands of a hacker by the name of SHADOWBYT3$. Claiming to have stolen 859 MB of data, Nintendo has now confirmed that the data breach occurred, though has stated most of the information stolen “dates back several years.”

In a statement given to Nintendo Life, Nintendo writes:

We are aware of an issue involving TinyPulse, a third-party service used for internal employee surveys at Nintendo of America. Nintendo’s systems have not been compromised, and no personal customer or financial data has been accessed. The data involved is limited to internal survey content comprising a small subset of our employees, and most of the information dates back several years.

Revealing that it is working with a service provider to investigate the issue, Nintendo thanks its employees for being willing to share their experience. There’s no mention of even attempting to pay the hacker, who has demanded a $2 million ransom to prevent leaking the information. I wouldn’t expect Nintendo to pay that as it makes more sense to simply plug the holes and move on versus handing over extortion fees.
