According to the mostly reliable billbil-kun, Sega is gearing up to release Sonic Frontiers: Definitive Edition for Nintendo Switch 2 on June 23rd, 2026. While not formally announced by Sega yet, billbil-kun claims the game is set to appear at Sony’s recently announced “State of Play” presentation set for June 2nd, 2026. Alongside other PlayStation 5 announcements will be third-party games, many of which are heading to different consoles.

So, technically, this Definitive Edition isn’t a Switch 2 exclusive, but it will be an upgrade from the previously released Switch version of Sonic Frontiers, which was… well, compromised is a good way to put it. As billbil-kun notes, June 23rd is a significant date as it’s actually the 35th anniversary of the Sonic franchise. That would definitely be a way to celebrate the series, though I’m not sure how many people are willing to double-dip on a current-generation game.

What will this Definitive Edition contain? Earlier in the year, a Korean ratings board leaked some information for the game, and it seems to be more than just a visual upgrade. The biggest addition is that of an entirely new zone to explore, containing five overworld islands and a ton of new missions to complete. There are also aforementioned visual tweaks, though those are probably limited to the Switch 2 Edition more than the PS5 port. Considering this isn’t the first time we’re hearing about a Definitive Edition, this is likely to wind up being real.
