We’re only a scant few weeks away from the launch of the Virtual Boy app for Nintendo Switch Online subscribers, so people are now trying to figure out solutions to play these games in 3D that won’t break the bank. Nintendo is offering a $100 recreation of the original hardware, or a $25 cardboard headset that feels particularly ridiculous when you consider it’s merely cardboard. For months now, many have speculated that using the previously released Labo VR headset might be an option, and surprisingly, Nintendo has confirmed that it will work for Switch 1 users.
At a recent press event held in New York City, Gamesbeat spoke with Nintendo Treehouse staff member Corey Olcsvary and asked him directly if the Labo VR Kit would allow for stereoscopic 3D with the Virtual Boy app. He confirmed that it will, making my assumption that any pair of stereoscopic lenses should function fine with the system. We still don’t know if keeping the Nintendo Switch or Switch 2 docked will even allow play of Virtual Boy games on a TV, but undocking either system will theoretically allow users to slap on a pair of cheap stereoscopic glasses and be set.

I made a really esoteric joke months ago about using the packaging for Tool’s 2006 album “10,000 Days” to play Virtual Boy games, but it actually just might work. I’ll certainly give it a shot when the app is finally available for download.
