Ubisoft’s massive restructuring and cancellation of numerous games last week had many fans worried that the eternally gestating Beyond Good and Evil 2 would finally have the axe dropped on it. If you were one of the concerned, you can put those fears to bed as it seems the oft-delayed sequel is still alive and kicking. In a post on LinkedIn, Ubisoft creative director Fawzi Mesmar confirmed he and his team are unaffected by recent changes and that BG&E2 is still alive.

“Thank you for everyone who has reached out to me over the past few days in regards to recent news at Ubisoft,” Mesmar writes. “Myself, my team and our project Beyond Good and Evil 2 are unaffected by the recent changes.” While that doesn’t give us any new information about the project, it’s at least reassuring that a game with such a protracted development cycle wasn’t the first thing to be canned. With a development cycle going on nearly two decades at this point, it becomes increasingly more likely with each day that the game will fade into obscurity.

It’s absurd to think about it, but Beyond Good and Evil 2 was originally announced back in 2008. While Ubisoft only debuted a pre-rendered trailer then, actual footage from an alpha build would be featured at E3 2017, which is the last anyone has seen from the game. Series creator Michel Ancel would then leave Ubisoft (and the games industry) in 2020, and in 2023, the game’s original creative director, Emile Morel, passed away. To say BG&E2 has had a rough go is understating things.
