To kick off the new year with a ton of speculation and hope, Final Fantasy XIV director Naoki Yoshida said during a New Year’s in-game that fans should “look forward” to the hit MMO coming to Switch platforms. Specifically, when asked about the possibility of the game coming to Switch, Yoshida said, “Please look forward to it.” This was picked up by fan blog Livedoor, which captured a photo of Yoshida’s in-game chat.

This isn’t the first time we’ve heard rumblings of XIV getting a Switch port. Back at Gamescom 2025 in August, Yoshida had an interview with VGC where he said there were “positive discussions” with Square Enix regarding bringing the game to Nintendo’s platform. I’m not entirely sure the original Switch could handle an MMO like Final Fantasy XIV, but it should be no issue for the Switch 2. It would also open the game up to a much broader audience.
For now, 2026 is teeming with possibilities for what might wind up on Switch 2. We already have datamining suggesting that Monster Hunter Wilds could hit the platform, and recent PEGI ratings might indicate some Switch 2 edition ports of popular Nintendo games.
