Get ready for some bittersweet news this morning, Pokémon fans. Earlier today, Nintendo quietly dropped two small but noteworthy announcements. The first was a short video highlighting everyone’s favorite new Nintendo innovation, the Game Key Card.
For those out of the loop, Game Key Cards are essentially near-empty physical cartridges that trigger a digital download on your Nintendo Switch console. Unlike standard digital downloads, the Game Key Card must remain inserted in the console to play the game. On the upside, these cards can still be sold or traded once you are done playing, so it is not all bad news.
One detail in that video stood out. The upcoming Animal Crossing inspired Pokémon adventure Pokopia appears to be launching on a Game Key Card when it releases on March 5th, 2026, instead of a traditional game cartridge like every other first party Nintendo Switch 2 release so far. This information was later confirmed by the official Japanese Pokopia website.

Judging by fan reactions whenever Game Key Cards are discussed, it is safe to say this decision will not sit well with everyone. As a physical collector myself, I would much rather have the full game on a cartridge. Still, some developers claim that certain games simply do not perform as well when streaming data directly from a cart compared to SD Express cards or internal Switch 2 storage.
Pokopia launches on Nintendo Switch 2 on March 5th, 2026, with a suggested retail price of $69.99. Stay tuned for more details as they become available.
