Late the other night, Nintendo updated its Nintendo Music mobile app with the inclusion of Metroid II: Return of Samus’ soundtrack. At just 19 tracks and roughly 30 minutes, it’s not the longest soundtrack ever recorded or even the most music added to the app in a single go. Still, it’s another bit of nostalgia that is likely being used to promote the upcoming release of Metroid Prime 4: Beyond, which is still on track for a December 2025 release.

Composed by Ryoji Yoshitomi, Metroid 2’s soundtrack didn’t reinvent the wheel when it came to the soundscape of Samus’ adventures. Being only the second OST in the series, it established a couple of themes that are still present to this day in the series. It mostly built off of what composer Hirokazu Tanaka created for the original game, however. It’s a decent enough bit of music that was held back by the limitations of the original Game Boy, though I can’t help but love the sounds of that machine.

Here are all 19 tracks included:

  1. Title Screen
  2. Samus Appears
  3. SR388 Main Theme
  4. Vs. Metroid
  5. Metroid Destroyed
  6. SR388 Area BGM 1
  7. SR388 Ruins
  8. SR388 Area BGM 2
  9. Item Obtained
  10. SR388 Area BGM 3
  11. SR388 Area BGM 4
  12. Missiles Obtained
  13. SR388 Depths 1
  14. SE388 Depths 2
  15. Metroid Propagation
  16. SR388 Depths 3
  17. Vs. Queen Metroid
  18. Escape
  19. Ending

If this soundtrack gets you interested in experiencing Metroid 2, the game is available via the Game Boy App for Switch Online subscribers. It’s not a particularly long game, though it is obtuse with its level design and objectives. If you’d rather play a more updated take on this classic, the 3DS received a remake of the game in 2017 titled Metroid: Samus Returns. Fans also remade the game in the form of AM2R, or “Another Metroid 2 Remake,” that’s still floating around the internet.
