Switch Online subscribers are in for a treat this month. As announced by Nintendo last night, the Super Nintendo App is going to receive a trio of new games for October 2025. One of those is the western debut of Mario & Wario, the 1993 puzzle game developed by Game Freak before Pokémon would take over its existence. Only ever released in Japan, the game is a stark departure from the typical Mario title and asks players to guide Mario over obstacle courses while using the mouse to manipulate objects in the environment. It actually plays out similarly to Mario Vs. Donkey Kong 2: March of the Minis, just Mario isn’t miniature. It’s one of the few games that features Wario as a villain, as well.
The second of three games, and the only other notable one, is Fatal Fury Special. An updated version of Fatal Fury 2, the game was released for the SNES in 1995 and is one of the more graphically impressive titles for the system. What’s fun about this specific entry is that it contains a cameo from The King of Fighters. Players can encounter Ryo Sakazaki as a hidden boss if they meet certain criteria. It’s also got a decently sized roster of 15 characters, which is solid for a freebie on NSO.
Last, and certainly least, is Bubsy in: Claws Encounters of the Furred Kind. I’m not exactly sure why this is being added to NSO as a Bubsy collection was released in September, but this game is notorious for spawning the character of Bubsy and the awful games he could star in. Created as a response to all of the console mascots of the day (Mario and Sonic, mainly), Bubsy debuted on the SNES and would see ports to the Genesis and PC in the following months/years. The game seemingly misunderstands how platformers work and is often incredibly clunky to control. I guess having it available for posterities sake is something, but it’s a game you don’t need to truly experience. Just smack yourself in the head with a hammer for a bit and you’ll get the picture.
All three games are available on Switch Online today.
