Announced last night, Nintendo will be adding a duo of Game Boy Advance games to its Switch Online subscription service on September 25th, 2025. Spinoffs of once popular series, subscribers will be able to play both Mr. Driller 2 and Klonoa: Empire of Dreams from the comfort of their couches, beds, toilets, or wherever else they want to. It’s a dream come true!
Mr. Driller 2 I’m not personally familiar with, but the series became a smash hit in the late ’90s. The game was originally envisioned as the third “Dig Dug” title, but spun off into its own thing that has expanded the lore of Dig Dug considerably. I’ll never not be amazed by how its titular character is the son of Taizo Hori, the original character in Dig Dug, and that he has multiple siblings and this whole extended family tree. It’s ludicrous, but focusing on this specific game, it looks fun. Mr. Driller is always a good time, so I don’t doubt this sequel is worth playing.
Klonoa: Empire of Dreams is an interquel between Klonoa 1 and 2, and is a rather interesting de-make of the originals. It features 2D backgrounds instead of 3D rendered ones, but otherwise retains the same gameplay that made Klonoa a hit on the PlayStation 1. It’s interesting that it wasn’t included in that recent “Phantasy Reverie” compilation remake, but that won’t matter now. Switch owners will be able to play it along the originals from the comfort of… wait, I already used this line.
