Last night out of the blue, Nintendo released an update for its NSO Game Boy Advance app that brings some welcomed features to the emulator. The biggest update is a boost to 1080p rendering in handheld mode for owners of the Nintendo Switch 2, which should make the pixels look crisper on the device. The other updates are less impactful, though still appreciated.

For some reason, the GBA app did not have button remapping built in before. Now, you can remap controls from within the app, sidestepping doing it on a system level and messing up with your controller configuration in other games. The app has also been renamed a bit, going under the “Nintendo Classics” title instead of just NSO GBA. If that wasn’t enough, a new boot sound has been added that mimics the coin from the Super Mario Advance games. You can trigger the old one by tilting any joystick up, similar to how it works on the GameCube app.

Again, this isn’t some massive overhaul of GBA titles, but it’s still nice that Nintendo is slowly improving things.
