The slow drip feed of classic games for Nintendo Switch Online continues today with the addition of three SNES titles to the Switch’s growing catalog of classic games. As announced by Nintendo on its official YouTube channel, subscribers to NSO can now play “Fatal Fury 2,” “Sutte Hakkun,” and “Super Ninja Boy” on the SNES app at no additional charge. It seems that the theme, this time, is “ninja.”
Fatal Fury 2 actually makes some sense considering that one of the flagship characters from the series, Mai Shiranui, will be heading to Street Fighter 6 in the very near future. Fatal Fury 2 was her introduction to the world and she’s since gone on to become arguably the most recognizable kunoichi in video games. Super Ninja Boy is a game I’m not ultimately familiar with, but the ninja theming is on brand and it looks pretty cool.
Sutte Hakkun, however, is another Japanese game being added to the US SNES app and that’s really cool. A super late release on the console, one which actually hit the Super Famicom after the N64 had been on store shelves for a year, Sutte Hakkun is notable for being one of the premiere Satellaview games for Nintendo’s ill-fated satellite add-on. From its release in late November 1997, the game would receive three different updates with new levels and puzzles over the next two years, giving it a ton of longevity and replayability. Eventually, the game was made available through Nintendo’s “Nintendo Power” cartridge writing service in Japan, which let users take a blank cartridge to their local stores and download new games to it for a fraction of the retail cost.
For that alone, it’s incredible that Nintendo has simply uploaded the game to the NSO service. Now, we have an official re-release of Sutte Hakkun and the chance for international audiences to experience a game they never had the chance to properly play. All three of these games should now be available to play from the comfort of your Switch.
