It’s official! After years of rumors, leaks, and speculation, Nintendo has finally announced the Nintendo Switch 2. Watch the trailer below to see the console in action! While pricing and a release date have yet to be revealed, the trailer concludes with the announcement of a Nintendo Switch 2 Direct scheduled for April 2nd.

While the trailer is only 2 minutes long, it provides plenty of exciting new information. Let’s break it down!

The Console

The trailer primarily focuses on the hardware, with Nintendo highlighting updates to the screen size, dock, Joy-Con, and overall form factor. If this feels familiar, it’s likely because it aligns closely with the recent Switch 2 leaks we’ve seen over the past few weeks. Key features include the following:

  • A larger screen
  • U-shaped kickstand
  • Larger Joy-Con with a magnetic rail system
  • Two USB-C ports (one on the top, one on the bottom)
  • A more compact dock
  • A new button located below the home button on the right Joy-Con

Games

One of the more underwhelming aspects of the trailer was the lack of game announcements. However, there was a brief tease of what appears to be the next installment in the Mario Kart franchise!

The clip shows racers on the Mario Bros circuit, and features some slick new cart designs! All in all, we only got to see around 10 seconds of footage, but I’m sure we will see tons more in April!

Backwards Compatibility

In addition to unveiling the updated console, Nintendo confirmed that both physical and digital games will be backwards compatible with the Nintendo Switch 2. However, they noted that there will be some exceptions, promising to provide more details at a later date.

Nintendo Direct

The trailer concluded with the announcement of a Nintendo Direct dedicated to the Nintendo Switch 2, set to air on April 2nd. While the exact time has not yet been revealed, fans are encouraged to stay tuned for updates.

Hands On Experience

Finally, Nintendo confirmed that a series of hands-on events are going to be held around the world for the Nintendo Switch 2. Not a lot of details to share just yet, but stay tuned.
