The Game Awards 2024 (which should really consider changing its name to The Game Commercials) gave us a super quick glimpse of the next installment in the Sonic Racing series. While I’m not sure I understand Geoff Keighley’s claim of it being a legendary franchise, Sonic Racing CrossWorlds seems to be incorporating some elements from the Sonic live-action movies into its gameplay. The ridiculously brief trailer showed Shadow driving into what looked like one of the power rings that Sonic utilizes to travel instantly anywhere.
With the game having a planned release for mid-2025, there’s a chance this could wind up being a Switch 2 launch title. While I would expect it to actually appear on the current Switch, Nintendo has to have something lined up for the launch of its next console. Sega has been a big supporter of Nintendo’s hardware ever since it got out of the console race, so what better way than to put a new Sonic Racing game on it? There certainly isn’t going to be Mario Kart 9 anytime soon, right? Right?
