While rumors abound about the upcoming Switch 2 (or whatever Nintendo wants to call it), there is still a current system Nintendo has on the market and it’s still going strong. For 2025, we already know that Donkey Kong Country Returns HD is hitting in January and a new rumor suggests that the excellent 2016 3DS title Kirby: Planet Robobot will potentially be one of the last original Switch games released by the Big N.
Coming to us from the NatetheHate podcast, NateDrake and his guest star ModernVintageGamer discussed when Nintendo will unveil its plans for the next generation of its hardware and the conversation turned towards what’s left for the current Switch. Just as with other enhanced 3DS ports we’ve seen for the handheld, such as Luigi’s Mansion 2 HD, it appears as if one of the highest-rated Kirby games will find a new home on the original Switch. Maybe it’s a holdover for people who don’t immediately upgrade to the new hardware?
Nate and MVG don’t detail anything further, such as whether or not this will be a standard port or some enhanced remake/remaster. Still, the idea makes sense following Nintendo’s history with the Switch and its back catalog. 2025 would be almost ten years since the original Planet Robobot was released and a remaster would be a good way to celebrate that even if it is a bit early.
