In a (maybe not so) surprising announcement to kick off QuakeCon 2024, Bethesda has revealed that the daddy of all FPS games, Doom and Doom II, will be getting a new, enhanced re-release on all platforms with some brand-new campaign levels. Bundled in one package called DOOM + DOOM II, this latest port will include not only all of the original levels but several official expansions and even some unofficial ones.
Fans of classic Doom will already know about TNT: Evilution and The Plutonia Experiment, the two WAD packs released as “Final Doom,” but this new port will also include the Master Levels for Doom 2, No Rest for the Living, John Romero’s Sigil, and the brand-new episode “Legacy of Rust.” Legacy of Rust will feature maps created by id Software, Nightdive Studios, and MachineGames, meaning its probably the best classic Doom to get an official release.
If all of that wasn’t enough, a brand-new 25-map deathmatch pack will also be included, bringing the total multiplayer exclusive level count up to 43 maps. Sadly, online multiplayer doesn’t seem to be included, but PC players will also have more options for taking their Doom action online. At least as far as Switch is concerned, this new port will have 16:9 widescreen support, 1080p resolution playback, and 60 FPS.
While the full details of this re-release have not been made official yet, it stands to reason that this newest port of classic Doom will be a free update to previous owners. Bethesda has done this on PC in the past and it would be a show of good faith to continue it here. DOOM + DOOM II should be available soon on all platforms.
