When comparing to the past few years, it’s fair to say that 2024 has been quite slow in terms of Nintendo content. Most of the year’s lineup has been ports and remakes, so needless to say, when rumors start to circle about new games on the horizon, it’s exciting. Notably, a known leaker dropped a hint today that might suggest a new entry in the Kirby or Mario Party series is on the way.

The information provided is pretty minimal as is to be expected, in the original Tweet from the prominent leaker Midori states that Nintendo is working on a game with the codename “Banquet.” While it may seem like there isn’t much to gleam from that, it does point the focus in a few specific directions.

The first thought many had is that it could be an upcoming Kirby game, as Kirby codenames (with the exception of Forgotten Land, which used the codename “K15”) tend to be themed after food with names such as Torte, Parufe, and Eclair. The only real issue with this idea is that the Tweet phrased it as “development at Nintendo,” meanwhile Kirby games are developed by HAL Laboratories and published by Nintendo. While it could be just an instance of non-literal phrasing, it’s hard to say for now.

Another idea pointed out is that this could be a new Mario Party entry. The argument is that Super Mario Party’s codename was “Buffet” which is remarkably close to “Banquet.” Of course, that’s the only recent Mario Party game with a similar codename, so the evidence isn’t the most compelling. Even still, with how little information was given it seems pretty plausible.

That being said, as of now there isn’t any information to go off of beyond the original Tweet. While the leaker in question does have a fairly good track record, leaks as a whole are a touchy subject that shouldn’t be taken as fact. It is always nice to be able to look forward to new games though;  regardless of whether or not this leak is true and what it actually is if so, it at least provides some excitement for what may be to come.
