In keeping with tradition, Nintendo has announced the new classic games coming to Nintendo Switch Online well after most of us on the East Coast have gone to bed. I should be in bed, but now I’m too excited over the prospect of playing Super R-Type on the go! I’ll have to wait until tomorrow, however, since the three latest games will be added on April 12, 2024. Thankfully, April 12 is my birthday, so that’s fine by me.
Since Nintendo likes to be cute, technically two of these games are Super Famicom titles. Players will be able to bash their friends in the cartoonishly fun Amazing Hebereke or demolish some 16-bit buildings in the previously unlocalized Wrecking Crew ‘98. As for the sole SNES game, it is the aforementioned Super R-Type, which is an all-time classic.
As with other Switch Online classic games, online multiplayer is technically supported, so you can get your friends together to watch you beast through R-Type while they sit and wait. You can even destroy their hopes and dreams in Wrecking Crew ‘98, which surprisingly has a multiplayer mode. Save states and rewinds are also available to help alleviate some of that old-school brutality.
