As beloved as the Super Mario franchise is worldwide, the traditional titles tend to receive a lot of focus. That being said, fans of the various Mario-centric RPGs are plentiful nonetheless. From Paper Mario to the now-defunct Mario & Luigi series and more, these entries, while not as popular as the platformers, hold a significant place in many people’s thoughts. It seems that this sentiment even holds true for the higher-ups at Nintendo, as a survey asking fans about these games was recently released.

What did the Nintendo survey about Mario RPGs ask about?

The survey itself was made available to certain My Nintendo users from Europe and aimed to gauge how these players feel about the various Mario RPGs. Participants were asked about the games in the genre they had experience with, their opinions on the varied gameplay mechanics, and whether they enjoy original characters or classic Mario characters. The survey then concludes by asking players how they felt about the two most recent Mario RPG titles, Super Mario RPG and Paper Mario: The Origami King, and if they are looking forward to Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door.

Why is Nintendo surveying people on various Mario RPGs?

It’s impossible to say for sure what the implication of this survey is. Many theorize that given the recent activity the genre has seen, Nintendo is trying to gauge interest and may put more focus on RPG entries going forward. While very plausible, there isn’t really any evidence beyond speculation here.

Fans of the Mario & Luigi series, in particular, are very keen to find out what this means, as the series was mentioned in the survey despite the bankruptcy of AlphaDream in 2019. While it’s unlikely that Mario & Luigi will see a return anytime soon, Nintendo does seem to have a renewed interest in the popularity of the Mario RPGs, so if you’re a fan of any of these entries, be sure to keep an eye out.
