If you’re a child of the ‘90s, odds are you’ve probably had some experience with a Game Boy or Game Boy Color at some point or another. The groundbreaking handheld system took the world by storm, and it was as if everyone had one. That being said, it is certainly far from a perfect design. In the hands of a child, it may be more easily overlooked, but trying to revisit the system as an adult reveals how truly cumbersome and awkward the layout is to hold and use. Fortunately for those truly devoted to the system, it is now possible to mod a Game Boy Color to have a more ergonomic form factor.

The mod comes from LeggoMyFroggo (and assembled on video by Macho Nacho Productions) and is known as the Frog Boy Color. This redesign of the Game Boy Color combines the easier-to-hold shape of the Game Boy Advance with the classic charm of the original system. A handful of quality-of-life additions such as USB-C charging, dual speakers, and tactile buttons are all included as well. If you’re looking for an excuse to start a new project and have the means to do so, this is a pretty cool one!

For the full in-depth instructions on what is needed and how to build your own Frog Boy Color, you’ll want to check the GitHub post on the subject. This is by no means a simple project, and if you don’t have experience with soldering and electronics in general, it may not be for you. That being said, if you’ve got what it takes and put in the effort, the reward will be well worth it. An ergonomic way to relive nostalgia is something nearly anyone would take if given the opportunity, after all.
