In a bit of a surprise announcement today, Marvel Games and Skydance New Media have revealed Marvel 1943: Rise of Hydra as part of their GDC 2024 presence. Set in 1943 at the height of World War 2, the title will see Captain America and Black Panther clashing amidst the uncertainty of their allegiances while battling Nazis and attempting to thwart the plans of Hitler. That’s certainly a dramatic setting for a game.

Likely based on the limited comic series “Captain America/Black Panther: Flags of Our Fathers,” we don’t actually have much information about what genre this game will be or even what platforms it will be on. A trailer for the game totes the tagline, “Four heroes. Two Worlds. One War,” so that might point to this being a co-op action title. Marvel’s official website states that players will take control of the four characters at different points, so it could also be a single-player-only game.

As for who you’ll be controlling, Captain America is very obviously a young Steve Rogers. He does seem to resemble Wyatt Russel from Falcon and the Winter Soldier, but that’s likely down to Cap’s basic design. The Black Panther featured here will be Azzuri, the grandfather of T’Challa, though it’s not clear if there are connections to the MCU. The other two Nanali, a Wakandan spy, and Gabriel Jones, a US soldier from the Howling Commandos.

Buried in all of this extra info is that Marvel 1943 will be directed by Amy Hennig of Uncharted fame. It will also feature music from Grammy award-winning composer Stephen Barton. It’s already sounding pretty stacked and should be able to do justice to the characters unlike some past titles (cough Avengers cough).

No word yet on which consoles will be supported when 1943 releases next year, but here’s hoping a Switch 2 version may be in the works! Stay tuned.
