It’s the 28th anniversary of the release of Pokémon Red & Green in Japan, and that means it’s Pokémon Day! The tradition of fans across the world waking up bright and early (or not early at all, depending on the timezone) to watch a new presentation has lived on for years, and today was no different. Wrapping up the relatively short 13-minute showcase, Pokémon revealed a new entry in the Pokémon Legends series, Pokémon Legends: Z-A.
Many viewers were expecting to see a new Johto or Unova entry – especially after the presentation began with a group of Unown accompanying Pikachu. Cue the surprise to see Kalos of all places, with Pokémon like Furfrou being seen for the first time in years. Set to release sometime in 2025, the third version of Pokémon X & Y has finally become a reality.
It’s unclear as of now what will take place within the game, or even when it takes place. The trailer reveals that the story will follow an urban redevelopment plan for Lumiose City. It’s possible this means the game will take place before the events of X & Y and follow the creation of the urban metropolis Lumiose City becomes, or perhaps it is a new development set after the events of the original games. According to Nintendo of America, the game will be set entirely within Lumiose City – not the whole Kalos region. Perhaps a lot of the gameplay will take place within a digital world; after all, the trailer did bear a striking Tron-esque theme. We also know that Mega Evolution will have a role in the game, as hinted at the end of the trailer. Could this mean we’ll finally encounter new Mega Evolved Pokémon after all these years? Regardless, though, it seems Kalos will finally be getting the closure it never received over a decade ago.
