Fire Emblem: Fortune’s Weave is nearly upon us, so Nintendo has uploaded a nearly eight minute-long trailer that outlines some key points of the game for those still on the fence. I’m not sure if this will be the best entry point for the long-running series, but having the plot summarized and central game mechanics explained does, at least, give unaware players something to chew on while deciding if they want to purchase this.
The biggest piece of information comes from the plot summary, which Nintendo writes as, “Enter the Dagdan Empire — a prosperous land ruled by the gods — and compete in the Heroic Games for the chance to be granted one wish. Powerful fighters from across the land have gathered to participate, including four heroes whose fortunes are tied to the fate of the world.” That’s not unique within Fire Emblem, but I like the parallels to popular media like The Hunger Games here. It’s an interesting diversion.
More personally, we get introduced to the main cast, which includes everyone’s favorite character: Protagonist. Jokes aside, this trailer notes how your main character will be yours alone, which makes your choices in the game individualized. Your hero will be working alongside a colorful cast of comrades. These include Cai – a young boy seeking to free his father, Dietrich – a swordsman searching for tougher opponents, Theodora – a queen looking to fulfill the dream of her homeland, Leda – a musician with aspirations of revenge, Fortuna – The Goddess of Fate, and Sothis – The Progenitor God who sets you off on your quest.
Mechanics wise, the trailer highlights classic Fire Emblem turn-based gameplay as well as outlining the triangle weakness system that governs most units. Each main hero has a signature move they can use in battle (similar to Advance Wars), and you can call for a god’s favor to quickly turn the tides of battle in your favor. Dungeons are explorable to find gear, loot, and materials, and the aforementioned Heroic Games will test players by introducing unique stipulations for battle.
Fire Emblem: Fortune’s Weave release date
All told, it sounds like a rather substantial game, which is likely why Nintendo is charging $80 for it. Fire Emblem: Fortune’s Weave is scheduled for release on Switch 2 on September 17th, 2026.
