Sonic the Hedgehog 3 (the movie, not the game) has given three crucial teases of what’s to come this December.

First, a logo was revealed for the movie that’s heavily inspired by Sonic Adventure 2’s own branding. The half Sonic/half Shadow iconography comes just days after Sega announced Sonic x Shadow Generations, a return of the series’ 20th anniversary title with an all-new Shadow-led story.

Along with a chuckle (presumably from Shadow himself, whose casting remains a mystery) fans can also hear the second of those teases — a brief rendition of SA2’s main theme, “Live & Learn.” Devotees of the franchise have been eager to see if the song would have some kind of presence in the film, and this snippet is a good sign that some kind of fuller version could be on the way.

Jim Carrey is back for Sonic 3

Last but certainly not least is the news that Jim Carrey will be returning as Dr. Robotnik for the third film. It was previously up in the air whether the actor would reprise the role, as he’d seemingly announced some sort of retirement from film altogether in the lead up to Sonic the Hedgehog 2’s release.

Having made the Doctor his own when compared to the games’ portrayal, Carrey’s return is a welcome one, as his comedic talents serve as some of the most entertaining across both movies. How that could fare with the third movie’s subject matter (assuming it’ll be most informed by Adventure 2’s plot) will be interesting to see. It’s a safe bet he’ll be interacting with Shadow, but who knows — maybe he’ll go from Man on the Moon to Man Who Blew Up the Moon.

When will Sonic 3 release?

Sonic the Hedgehog 3 will arrive in theaters December 20th, 2024. For a look at Shadow, check out our coverage of Sonic 3 from last year.
