Welcome to amiibo Rewind! Each week, we take a look back at an amiibo event or release from the past 10 years to celebrate 10 amazing years of amiibo. Today, we’re taking a look back at the surprising Super Mario Cereal, with, you guessed it, an amiibo built into the box!

Officially announced in November 2017 and released on December 11th, Super Mario Cereal showcased a beautiful front cover featuring a render of Mario and Cappy, accompanied by a giant amiibo logo. The cereal itself was comprised of sweetened, wholegrain star shapes, and complemented by a generous serving of Mario-inspired marshmallows.

The real excitement, however, lay in the amiibo surprise built into the box. When tapping the box with Uncle amiibo in Super Mario Odyssey, you discover that the cereal box amiibo actually has a name, and a pretty great one at that; “Delicious amiibo.” Tapping this amiibo  allows you to locate a Power Moon in whichever level you scanned it in, adding a fun new way to play with your food! While not the most groundbreaking feature, it still stands out as the best prize I got out of a box of cereal since I was 10!

Sadly, a mere five months after its initial debut, a revamped version of Super Mario Cereal hit the shelves, sporting a fresh box design but devoid of any amiibo support. This change marked a somber conclusion for what had once been a beautiful marriage of breakfast and video gaming, leaving amiibo fans everywhere mourning.

Stay tuned to Nintendo Wire throughout 2024 as we celebrate 10 years of amiibo memoires!
