Super Smash Bros. series director Masahiro Sakurai has announced that he’s planning on wrapping up his YouTube series, “Masahiro Sakurai on Creating Games,” at some point in 2024. Having launched the series in August of 2022 as a way to provide development tips and insights to potential game devs, it seems Sakurai has run the course for what he feels he needs to say.

What has Sakurai posted on YouTube?

With 180 videos currently on his channel over the last year and a half, Sakurai has put out roughly two videos a week since the channel started. He’s covered everything from frame rates to game concepts and even expressed his love for different genres of games. The man has a clear passion for not only game creation but the act of playing games too.

As one of the most dedicated creators in gaming today, Sakurai has gone above and beyond with each installment of the Smash Bros. franchise to give fans what they want. With the launch of Super Smash Bros. Ultimate in 2018, he achieved what many thought was impossible by bringing back every single character from the series’ history. The continued DLC support for the game also brought in some highly requested characters, culminating in Kingdom Hearts’ Sora as the final fighter. The team at Sora LTD (Sakurai’s company) has done an incredible job.

What’s Sakurai working on next?

As for what’s next, it seems very unlikely that Sakurai is giving up his trade. While Super Smash Bros. probably has a long wait before the next entry happens, there is no way that Sakurai is ready to retire yet.
