The internet just about lost its collective mind when it was confirmed that Homelander (from Amazon’s adaptation of the comic series The Boys) would following in the footsteps of fellow super-powered psycho Omni-Man (from Amazon’s Invincible) and joining the cast of Mortal Kombat 1. Where Homelander and Omni-Man differ, however, is that Homelander will not be voiced by his original actor, Anthony Starr, while Omni-Man’s Mortal Kombat 1 appearance is voiced by the irreplaceable J.K. Simmons.

Anthony Starr took to Instagram last month to answer fan questions, and when one commenter asked him if he’d be voicing Homelander in the brutally iconic fighting game series, Starr replied with a simple, one-word answer: “nope.” Fans on the Mortal Kombat subreddit lamented the news, while others are convinced that Starr actually will be voicing Homelander but is lying to keep fans off the scent of… something, it’s not really clear. I guess we’ll see what happens when Homelander finally makes his way to Mortal Kombat 1 sometime next year.
