Dragon Quest Monsters will be getting a long-awaited new entry this winter with a new adventure starring Dragon Quest IV’s Psaro and if you’re curious how it’ll play, Square Enix has you covered.

In a new blog post, the developers run down the basics of combat. For starters, you’ll have eight monsters in your party at a time – four on the field and four in your reserves. These numbers can change, however, depending on whether or not you have a Large monster in your team. You’ll be able to give them precise orders or more vague commands.

Naturally the game will let you recruit monsters, too. While it’s possible to rely on luck and hope monsters come to you after a battle and offer to join, you can make it more likely by using a Show of Force or handing over items like food. After you’ve recruited a fair few monsters you can turn to Synthesis to combine two together and this latest incarnation of the system promises to be “the most intuitive system that the series has ever seen”.

You can catch more screenshots and details at the official blog post.

More details have been shared regarding the game’s Digital Deluxe edition, too, which will include a variety of outfits for protagonist Psaro, and some items to give you an easier start. Get a good look at that new Akira Toriyama artwork, too!

Dragon Quest Monsters: The Dark Prince launches exclusively for Switch on December 1st, 2023.
