The GBA’s Sonic Advance trilogy is often regarded as one of the unsung high points in the hedgehog’s history, offering up three portable platformers in an era where Sega was readjusting to being a third party developer.

Sonic Advance 2 is regarded by many as the best of the bunch, though it had some notable issues, such as bottomless pits. Thankfully, this new ROM hack is here to fix those issues!

Sonic Advance 2 SP uses the new AdvanceTools suite created by MainMemory and fixes a few of the more notorious problems. Namely…

  • Most bottomless pits are replaced with new routes or more easily telegraphed
  • Special Rings are more plentiful making it easier to access Special Stages
  • Only five Special Rings are required to access Special Stages
  • Adjusted enemy placements to reduce “cheap shots”

It is clarified that the latter half of the game may bring back bottomless pits and trickier enemies, though, so the goal is to simply give the game a fairer difficulty curve.
