Double Dragon revolutionised the beat ’em up genre when it launched in arcades way back in 1987, implementing features like two player co-op and cinematic cutscenes. Unfortunately, despite its early boom, it has had relatively few sequels and spin-offs in the modern era. Thankfully, publisher Modus Games and developer Secret Base are rectifying that.

The newly announced Double Dragon Gaiden: Rise of the Dragons takes the action back to 199X in the form of a prequel where you fight to take back New York City from gangs in the aftermath of nuclear war. You’ll be able to play as Billy and Jimmy as usual, but 11 other characters will also be featured, as will a tag-team function that’ll let you swap out on the fly.
